The slab is solid, but it looks tired. It is stained, pitted, faded or rough on top. When the concrete underneath is sound, concrete resurfacing can give you a fresh surface for far less than a tear out and a new pour. It is a smart fix for many Lubbock patios and driveways that have been baked by the sun and scoured by the wind.

Lubbock Concrete handles concrete resurfacing for patios, walks, driveways, pool decks and garage floors in Lubbock, TX and across the South Plains. We check your slab first, and we give you a free written estimate.

When concrete resurfacing is the right choice

Concrete resurfacing works when the slab is strong, level and mostly crack free, and the damage is on the surface. Think pitting, light scaling, stains, old paint, fading and a rough texture. A thin bonded layer covers all of it.

It is not the fix for a slab that is sinking, heaving or cracked through. Those problems start in the soil, and a new layer will crack along the same lines. We tap the slab, check for movement and tell you honestly if resurfacing will last.

How concrete resurfacing is done

Prep is everything. We clean the slab deeply, remove loose material and old coatings, repair cracks and etch or grind the surface so the new layer bonds. We apply a bonding primer, then spread the overlay with a squeegee or trowel, usually between one eighth and one half inch thick.

The surface can be left smooth, broomed for grip, sprayed with a light texture or stamped. Color can be added to the mix or applied afterward with stain. We seal the finished surface to protect it from sun, water and stains.

Options and finishes for resurfaced concrete

You can choose a plain gray, a warm tan, a terracotta tone or a custom color. Texture can be smooth or nonslip. Stamped patterns make an old slab look like stone. See stamped concrete and concrete staining and sealing for details.

Resurfacing also works well around pools, where the new surface can add grip and a cooler color. A lighter overlay reflects the Lubbock sun and keeps the surface more comfortable.

Concrete resurfacing cost and next steps

Resurfacing usually costs much less than a tear out and a new pour. A typical patio can be finished in one to two days, plus cure time. Price depends on size, condition, finish and access.

If your slab is too far gone, we will say so and talk about removal and a new slab. Call us or use the contact page for a free written estimate.

Concrete Resurfacing questions answered

How long does concrete resurfacing last?

A well done overlay can last 10 to 15 years or more when the slab beneath is stable. The key is the prep and the right products. We clean the surface deeply, repair cracks and use a polymer modified overlay that bonds well to the old concrete. Then we seal it, which protects against stains, sun and water.

Lifespan also depends on use. A patio that sees foot traffic lasts longer than a driveway with heavy trucks. In Lubbock, wind and sun are hard on surfaces, so keeping the sealer fresh helps a lot. If the old slab keeps moving, the overlay will crack along the same lines, so we tell you when resurfacing is not a good choice. Keep roof water and sprinkler spray away from the edges of your slab, since wet soil next to concrete is a common cause of movement. If the forecast turns bad the night before, we call and reschedule, because a short delay is better than a damaged slab.

Can you resurface concrete that has cracks?

It depends on the crack. Thin cracks that are stable can be filled before we apply the overlay, and the overlay covers them nicely. Wider cracks need proper repair first. We rout them, fill them with flexible filler or a repair mortar and sometimes stitch them.

If a crack shows movement, with one side higher than the other, the slab is shifting, and an overlay will crack again along the same line. In that case, we may suggest fixing the cause or replacing the slab. We look at your concrete, test it and tell you plainly. We want your concrete resurfacing to look good five years from now, not just next week. Texas heat can push concrete to set faster than expected, so we bring extra hands and plan the finishing order before the truck arrives. If you have an HOA, get approval in writing before the pour, and we will help with a simple sketch and finish samples.

What can a resurfaced surface look like?

Many things. A smooth trowel finish is clean and modern. A light broom finish adds grip. A spray texture looks like soft stone. Stamped patterns look like slate, flagstone or brick. We can add color to the overlay and stain for shading, so the patio looks like it has depth.

Think about how you use the space. Around pools and on walkways, we choose textured finishes for safety. On a covered patio, a smoother finish is easy to clean. We bring samples to your estimate. Color in the Lubbock sun looks different than in a showroom, so we hold the samples outside. We keep the same crew on your job from start to finish whenever we can, so the people who plan it also build it. Please call with any question, large or small, because we would rather answer it now than have you wonder. Tell us what will sit on the slab or drive across it, since the weight on each wheel decides how thick the concrete should be.

Is resurfacing cheaper than replacing the slab?

In most cases, yes. Resurfacing skips demolition, hauling, a new base and a full pour. That saves time and money. The cost depends on the size, the condition of the old slab and the finish you choose. Decorative finishes cost more than a basic broom or smooth surface.

If your slab has big problems, repair costs can climb, and replacement may give you better value. We walk the job, tap the concrete for hollow spots and compare both options for you in your free estimate. The goal is to spend your money where it does the most good. For a solid slab with a worn top, concrete resurfacing is usually the smarter buy. Rinse oil, grease and fuel spills off concrete as soon as you can, because they soak in and stain over time. Fresh concrete is alkaline and can irritate skin, so keep kids and pets away and wash off any wet concrete right away.

How long before I can use my resurfaced patio?

You can usually walk on it in about 24 hours. Wait 48 hours before moving furniture back and avoid dragging anything heavy. The overlay is thin, so it cures fairly quickly, but the sealer needs time too. We seal the surface after it has cured, and then you wait another day or so before normal use.

For driveways, give it about seven days before cars and longer before heavy trucks. Weather matters. Wind and heat can dry an overlay too fast, so we plan around the forecast, and we do not resurface right before a storm. We tell you the exact day your surface is ready and how to keep it looking fresh. Do not use de icing salt on new concrete, because it can scale the surface, and a little sand gives traction without harm. The first week after the pour is the most important time for the concrete, so a little patience then pays off for decades.

Will the new layer peel or flake?

Poor work can peel, which is why prep matters so much. Peeling usually happens when the old surface was dirty, sealed or oily and the new layer never bonded. We avoid that by cleaning deeply, grinding or etching where needed and using a bonding primer. We also use overlay products made for concrete that flex a little with temperature changes.

After the job, simple care helps. Seal on schedule, rinse off spills and avoid scraping with metal shovels. If a small spot ever chips, it can be patched. A properly bonded overlay becomes part of the slab and should not peel. We stand behind our work. We follow the plans for steel size and spacing, and we use chairs to hold rebar off the dirt so it ends up in the middle of the slab. Our estimates are written, with the scope and the price spelled out, so you can keep them and compare them fairly.
